Scanlon Named NWC Baseball Position Player Student-Athlete of the Week

SALEM, Ore. -- Willamette University junior second baseman Justin Scanlon (San Jose, CA/Leigh HS/West Valley College) has been selected as the Northwest Conference Baseball Position Player Student-Athlete of the Week for his efforts in the Bearcats' three-game series with George Fox University on Saturday, April 13 and Sunday, April 14. The Bearcats defeated the Bruins in all three games, winning 8-5 on Saturday, followed by 10-4 and 9-1 victories on Sunday.

Scanlon batted .563, and hit a home run in all three games. He finished the weekend with five runs and 10 RBIs, while hitting his way to a 1.313 slugging percentage. In addition to smacking three homers, he also hit one double and one triple.

During the series, Scanlon earned at least two hits, two runs and two RBIs in each game. He was 3 for 5 in the opener, 2 for 6 in the second game, and 4 for 5 in the third game. In the third game, he hit for three-fourths of the cycle with a single, a triple and a home run. On defense, he recorded 10 putouts, 11 assists and no errors during the three games.

Scanlon is hitting .369 for the season to rank second on WU's offensive chart. He leads the Bearcats with 30 RBIs and two triples, and is tied for first with 12 doubles. He is second with a .670 slugging percentage, 38 hits and 26 runs, and is tied for second with five homers.

After sweeping the Bruins, Willamette is now 16-13 on the season, including 13-8 in the NWC. Willamette will complete it's NWC regular season schedule by playing Pacific Lutheran University on Friday, April 19 and Saturday, April 20 at John Lewis Field. On Friday, the teams will play one game starting at 3 p.m. (PDT). On Saturday, the Bearcats and the Lutes will battle it out in a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m.
