Nelson is Selected NWC Defensive Student-Athlete of the Week

Achieves 14 Tackles, Intercepts Pass in 56-30 Win at Lewis & Clark

SALEM, ORE. -- Willamette University junior inside linebacker Jack Nelson (Portland, OR/Jesuit HS) has been named Northwest Conference Defensive Student-Athlete of the Week following a standout performance in the Bearcats' 56-30 victory over Lewis & Clark Collegein the annual Wagon Wheel game on Saturday, Oct. 19 at Griswold Stadium.

Nelson registered 14 tackles, including nine solo stops, as Willamette improved to 5-0 on the season and advanced in the national rankings of both D3football.com (#21) and the American Football Coaches Association (#19).

He provided several big plays, including a leaping interception in the third quarter. He achieved 0.5 tackles for losses, including 0.5 quarterback sacks for four yards.

Led by Nelson, the Willamette defense harried Lewis & Clark quarterback Keith Welch all day, achieving three interceptions. The Bearcats limited the Pioneers to 2.9 yards per running play.

For the season, Nelson leads Willamette with 36 solo tackles, 29 assists and 65 total tackles. He has earned 1.5 tackles for losses, 1.5 sacks, one fumble recovery, and one forced fumble.

Willamette will host Northwest Conference rival Pacific Lutheran University, ranked #17 by D3football.com and #16 by the AFCA, on Saturday, Oct. 26 at McCulloch Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 1:30 p.m. (PDT).
