Leading Tackler Set for Senior Year with Bearcats

SALEM, ORE. -- Willamette University inside linebacker Jack Nelson (Sr., Portland, OR/Jesuit HS) has been named NCAA Division III Second Team Preseason All-America by the Beyond Sports Network. A total of 93 athletes were chosen for the Preseason All-America Team.

Nelson was a finalist for the Cliff Harris Award last season. He was named First Team All-Northwest Conference in 2012 and 2013.

Last fall, he registered 67 unassisted tackles and produced 45 assists to lead the NWC with 112 total tackles. He ranked seventh in NCAA Division III in solo tackles per game (7.4 avg.) and was ninth in total tackles per game (12.4 avg.).

Nelson earned 10 or more tackles in all nine games, helping the Bearcats earn a 7-2 record. He tied for first place on the Willamette roster with 9.5 tackles for loss and achieved 2.5 quarterback sacks. He intercepted two passes, broke up two passes, recovered two fumbles and forced a fumble.

During his Willamette career, he has contributed 211 total tackles, including 128 solo stops and 83 assists. He has provided the team with 16.0 tackles for loss and 6.0 sacks. He has earned six pass break-ups to go along with three interceptions.

In Nelson's three seasons with the Bearcats, the team has attained an overall record of 19-10, including 15-4 the past two years. Willamette placed third in the NWC in 2012 and 2013.
