Jones Ties for Sixth Place, as Bearcats Finish Fifth at Oregon Tech Invitational

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. -- Trent Jones (So., Kenmore, WA/Shorecrest HS) of Willamette University tied for sixth place, and the Bearcats placed fifth in the team standings, as the Oregon Tech Invitational in men's golf concluded on Tuesday, Sept. 13 at the Running Y Ranch.

Jones, who began the day tied for 14th place after the first 36 holes on Monday, moved up in the final round with a 71. He completed the tournament at 223 (78-74-71) to finish in a two-way tie for sixth.

William Jessup University (Calif.) earned the team championship in the 54-hole event with a score of 889 (295-294-300). Oregon Tech placed second at 894 (307-297-290) and Corban University was third at 909 (317-297-295). Sierra Nevada College (Nev.) finished fourth at 912 (304-305-303. Willamette's team score for fifth place was 915, as the Bearcats carded 315-299-301.

Sixth place went to Simpson University (Calif.) at 921 (311-299-311). College of Idaho took seventh place at 938 (316-319-303) and Corban's "B" team was eighth at 942 (321-314-315). Northwest Christian University (Ore.) placed 10th with a score of 1,011 (342-335-334) and California Maritime Academy was 11th at 1,105 (387-363-355).

Jones led the way for the Bearcats with his tie for sixth. Peter Mitzel (Sr., Red Bluff, CA/Red Bluff HS) and Kenneth Sheldon (So., Ocean Park, WA/Ilwaco HS) tied with two other golfers for 12th place. Mitzell carded 78-73-76--227, while Sheldon recorded 72-74-81--227. A total of 71 golfers competed in the tournament.

Sam Hinton (So., Seaside, OR/Seaside HS) of Willamette shot 232 (79-76-77), one stroke in front of teammate Collin Fuller (Sr./Jr., Grants Pass, OR/Grants Pass HS), who registered a final score of 233 (80-76-77).

Other golfers competing for Willamette were Spencer Hong (Jr., Bellevue, WA/Singapore American School) at 235 (79-77-79), Clark Wilson (Sr., Ocean Park, WA/Ilwaco HS) at 237 (80-78-79), and Dylan King at 272 (92-91-89). Willamette's team score was based on the top four scores in each round by Jones, Mitzel, Hinton, Fuller and Wilson.

The individual title was won by Johnnie Greco of William Jessup, who carded a score of 215 (70-68-77). His 68 in the second round on Monday was the low round of the tournament.

Three golfers from Oregon Tech -- Montana Frame, Houston Knox, and Kyle Wolf -- tied for second place, all at 217. Frame shot 74-73-70, Houston earned 75-72-70, and Wolf achieved scores of 71-71-75.

Anthony Moncada of Sierra Nevada placed fifth, as he finished at 220. He recorded rounds of 76, 72 and 72.

Tying Jones for sixth place was Isaac Calderon from Corban. Calderon's score of 223 included two rounds of 77 on the first day, followed by a 69 on the second day. His 69 was the low score in Tuesday's round.

Up next for the Bearcats is the Pacific Invitational on Sept. 24-25. The tournament will be held at Quail Valley Golf Course in Banks, Oregon.
