SALEM, Ore. -- Willamette University golfer Trent Jones (So., Kenmore, WA/Shorecrest HS) has been named the Northwest Conference Men's Golf Student-Athlete of the Week for his efforts in the Willamette Cup on Saturday, Feb. 25. Jones took first place in the individual standings and helped Willamette win the team championship for the fourth consecutive season.

The Willamette Cup was held at Stone Creek Golf Club in Oregon City, Oregon. The first round was completed on Saturday. Wet grounds and the threat of additional rain forced the second round to be canceled on Sunday.

Jones won medalist honors with an even-par 72, as he finished 18 holes with a four-stroke advantage over four golfers tied for second place.

Willamette topped the team standings with a score of 304, as the Bearcats recorded an eight-stroke victory. Linfield College was second at 312, Lewis & Clark College was fourth at 320 and Pacific University placed fourth at 333.

Jones was one of five WU golfers who placed ninth or higher. Peter Mitzel (Sr., Red Bluff, CA/Red Bluff HS) tied for second place at 76. Collin Fuller (Sr., Grants Pass, OR/Grants Pass HS) and Sam Hinton (So., Seaside, OR/Seaside HS) each tied for sixth place with a 77. Kenneth Sheldon (So., Ocean Park, WA/Ilwaco HS) was one of four athletes who tied for ninth with a 78.

It is the third time Jones has been named NWC Men's Golf Student-Athlete of the Week in 2016-17. He previously received the award on Sept. 19 and Oct. 11.

Up next on the Bearcats' schedule is the University of Puget Sound Invitational, set for March 4-5 at Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton, Washington.
