Jones Named NWC Men's Golf Student-Athlete of the Week for Fourth Time

SALEM, Ore. -- Trent Jones (So., Kenmore, WA/Shorecrest HS) from Willamette University has been chosen as the Northwest Conference Men's Golf Student-Athlete of the Week for his efforts at the University of Puget Sound Invitational on Saturday, March 4 and Sunday, March 5. Jones was selected for the Student-Athlete of the Week honor for the fourth time in 2016-17.

Jones previously received the award on Sept. 19, Oct. 11 and just a week ago on Feb. 27. He was named Student-Athlete of the Week on two occasions as a freshman in 2015-16.

At the Puget Sound Invitational, Jones recorded a 36-hole score of 142 (72-70) to tie for second place in the individual standings. He finished just two strokes behind the winner, Hunter Hechtman from Olympic College, who carded two-day total of 140 (70-70). Matching Jones for second place was Davis Gullikson of Olympic College, who shot a tournament-low 67 in the first round and added a 75 in the second round for a score of 142.

Jones led Willamette to third place in the team standings. The Bearcats shot 596 overall and registered the low score of the second round at 294. Willamette shot 302 in the first round.

The Bearcats placed three golfers among the top six finishers. In addition to the tie for second involving Jones, Willamette also was represented by two of four golfers tied for fourth. Peter Mitzel (Sr., Red Bluff, CA/Red Bluff HS) carded 69-74--143 and Sam Hinton (So., Seaside, OR/Seaside HS) shot 74-69--143.

Willamette will be back in action at the Whitworth Invitational on Saturday, March 11 and Sunday, March 12. The tournament will be played at the Wildhorse Golf Course in Pendleton, Oregon.
