Jones Receives NWC Men's Golf Student-Athlete of the Week Honor

SALEM, Ore. -- Trent Jones (Jr., Kenmore, WA/Shorecrest HS) from Willamette University has been chosen as the Northwest Conference Men's Golf Student-Athlete of the Week after winning the individual championship at the 2017 NWC Fall Classic on Oct. 14-15 at Quail Valley Golf Course. Jones also helped the Bearcats claim the team title.

Jones ended the 36-hole tournament with a score of 6-under-par 136. He was tied with Mitchell Baldridge from Pacific Lutheran University for first place. The two golfers went to the 10th hole, a par-5, to begin the sudden-death playoff. Jones grabbed medalist honors on the first playoff hole by sinking a 10-foot putt for birdie. Baldridge missed a two-foot putt that was also for birdie

The Bearcats won the team title by 14 strokes with a score of 562. Willamette shot 282 in the first round and 280 in the second round for the two lowest rounds of the tournament. The Bearcats have completed their fall season with four team titles and three individual titles at the four tournaments they entered.

Willamette also holds an early lead for the overall 2017-18 NWC Championship. The Fall Classic is one of three tournaments used to determine the overall NWC champion and is worth one-fourth of the title. The NWC Spring Classic also is worth one-fourth, while, the NWC Tournament at the end of the spring season counts for one-half of the title. Willamette leads the current standings with 8 points, followed by George Fox with 7, Pacific Lutheran with 6, Whitworth with 5, Linfield with 4, Puget Sound with 3, Pacific with 2, Whitman with 1 and Lewis & Clark with 0.
