Willamette Finishes Third during 2018 Collegiate Invitational at The Home Course

DuPONT, Wash. -- Willamette University placed five golfers within three strokes of each other, as the Bearcats took third place in the team standings with a 36-hole score of 583 as the 2018 Collegiate Invitational ended on Monday, Sept. 17 at The Home Course. Action in the tournament, which was hosted by Pacific Lutheran University, was suspended partway through the first round on Sunday, Sept. 16. The rest of the first round and all of the second round were played on Monday.

All five of Willamette's golfers who competed in the tournament finished within three strokes of each other. Andrew Kibbee (Fr., Kenmore, WA/Bothell HS) led the way in his first collegiate meet with a score of 145, as he tied for seventh place. Kibbee carded a 1-under-par 71 in the first round and a 74 in the second round.

Kenneth Sheldon (Sr., Ocean Park, WA/Ilwaco HS) tied for 10th at 146 with an even-par 72 in the first round and a 74 in the second round. Austin Davis (Fr., Culver City, CA/Culver City HS) tied for 13th by shooting 147. He recorded a 74 followed by a 73.

Sam Hinton (Sr., Seaside, OR/Seaside HS) and Trent Jones (Sr., Kenmore, WA/Shorecrest HS) each shot 148 to tie for 18th. Hinton carded a 77 and then shot a 1-under-par 71. Jones shot a 75 in the first round and a 73 in the second round.

Derrick Phillips from Whitworth University won the individual championship with a score of 4-under-par 140. He tied for the tournament's low round with a 69 over the first 18 holes and then shot a 71. Travis Bossio of Grays Harbor College (Wash.) was second at 141 (70-71).

Three golfers tied for third place at 142. They were Jared Beals and Jordan Brajcich of Pacific Lutheran and Zach Stocker from Community Colleges of Spokane. Beals shot 72-70, while Brajcich carded 73-69 and Stocker shot 71-71. Ryan Brown of Whitworth placed sixth at 143 (70-763).

Kibbee was tied for seventh with Austin Darnell of PLUY and Reilly Hegerty from Whitworth. Darnell shot 69-73 and Hegery Carded 72-73.

Whitworth topped the team standings with a score of 577 (287-290). Pacific Lutheran was second at 579 (209-289). Willamette placed third at 583 (292-291). Grays Harbor grabbed fourth place at 588 (295-293) and CC of Spokane was fifth at 601 (301-300). A total of 66 golfers and 13 teams competed in the tournament.
