Bearcats Secure 3rd Place at Bulldog Invitational as Davis Ties for 2nd

RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. -- Willamette University shot a team score of 7-under-par 281 during the final round of the Bulldog Invitational in men's tennis on Sunday, Sept. 22 to finish in third place. The Bearcats earned an overall score of 872 in the three rounds of the 54-hole tournament, which was hosted at The S Club by the University of Redlands. Willamette golfer Austin Davis (So., Culver City, CA/Culver City HS) tied for second on the individual leaderboard with a score of 5-under-par 211.

Davis led a strong finish for the Bearcats, who put three golfers in the top 12. Davis carded rounds of 73, 69 and 69 to tie for second place with Titus Goodman of Vanguard University (Cailf.), who also totaled 211 with rounds of 71, 71 and 69.

Andrew Kibbee (So., Kenmore, WA/Bothell HS) of Willamette tied for ninth at 214 (72-72-70). Also shooting 214 were Ryan Kyaw from California Lutheran University, who shot 72-73-69, and Vikram Chatterjee from Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (Calif.), who shot 71-74-69. Willamette's Alex Weirth (Fy., Port Orchard, WA/Crosspoint Academy) was 12th at 215 (75-71-69).

Davis and Weirth each carded a 3-under-par 69 in the final round on Sunday, while Kibbee registered a 2-under-par 70. Tyler Shreve (So., Buffalo, WY/Buffalo HS) of WU contributed a 73 in Sunday's round to help the Bearcats reach their 7-under team score at 281.

Shreve completed the tournament at 241 (85-83-73). Carlos Cortes Dequidt (Fy., San Diego, CA/Torrey Pines HS) shot 248 for the Bearcats (83-76-88).

The individual champion of the Bulldog Invitational was Jake Hollander from Redlands, who carded the low round of the entire tournament on Sunday with a 68. He shot 7-under-par 209 overall, including rounds of 69 and 72 on Saturday.

Following the tie between Davis and Goodman for second place were three competitors tied for fourth place at 212. Austin Long of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps shot 74-71-67, while teammate Harry Brenner registered 70-72-70. Tyler McDaniel from Vanguard shot 71-70-71.

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps claimed the team title at 17-under-par with a score of 847. The Stags shot 284 in the first round, 286 in the second round and 277 in the third round. Redlands was second at 868 (290-292-286) and Willamette was third at 872 (303-288-281). California Lutheran took fourth place at 881 (292-299-290), with Vanguard in fifth place at 882 (292-297-293).

Rounding out the tournament were Pomona-Pitzer (Calif.) in sixth place, Whittier College (Calif.) in seventh, and the Redlands "B" team in eighth. Pomona-Pitzer carded a score of 891 (297-300-294). Whittier shot 928 (310-304-314) and the Redlands "B" team shot 929 (315-308-306).

Willamette will golf again on Saturday, Oct. 5 and Sunday, Oct. 6 at the George Fox Invitational. The tournament will be held at Gearhart Golf Course in Gearhart, Oregon.
