SALEM, Ore. -- Willamette University's Alex Weirth (Fy., Port Orchard, WA/Crosspoint Academy) has been named Northwest Conference Men's Golf Student-Athlete of the Week after winning the George Fox University Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 5 and Sunday, Oct. 6 at the Gearhart Golf Course. It was his first individual title in his first year as a collegiate golfer. Weirth shot a 36-hole total of 143 to win by one stroke over Joshua Lackey of George Fox, who took second place at 144.

Weirth carded an even-par 72 in the first round and shot a 1-under-par 71 in the second round. Weirth's 71 tied four other golfers -- including WU teammate Andrew Kibbee (So., Kenmore, WA/Bothell HS) -- for the second lowest round of the tournament. Lackey of GFU registered the lowest round with a 70 on the second day after shooting a 2-over-par 74 on the first day.

Kibbee tied for fourth place at 146 (75-71). Austin Davis (So., Culver City, CA/Culver City HS), also from Willamette, tied for 11th place at 151 (75-76).

The Bearcats placed third in the team standings at 600 (299-301). George Fox won the team title at 591 (296-295), and Pacific Lutheran University was second at 597 (291-306).

Willamette will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 12 and Sunday, Oct. 13 at the NWC Fall Classic. The tournament will be hosted by George Fox at the Oregon Golf Association (OGA) Golf Course in Woodburn, Oregon.
