Bearcats Put Scare in Lutes, but PLU Rallies for 2-1 Win

Jensen Gives WU a 1-0 Lead in First Half

SALEM, ORE. -- Willamette University scored first as the Bearcats went for their second victory over Pacific Lutheran University this year, but the Lutes rallied in the second half for 2-1 win on Saturday, Oct. 22 at Sparks Field.

Pacific Lutheran improved to 12-2-0 on the season, 9-1-0 in the Northwest Conference. Willamette, which upset the Lutes, 2-1, in Tacoma, Wash., on Sept. 18, fell to 5-6-2 overall, 4-5-1 in the NWC.

Trevor Jensen (So., MF, Chula Vista, CA/Bonita Vista HS) scored Willamette's goal 14:12 into the game. Jensen shot from 12 yards out, sending the ball into the lower right corner. He was assisted by Adan Vazquez (So., F, Woodburn, OR/Woodburn HS).

PLU evened the score with a shot by Spencer Augustin at 55:53, as he sent the ball past the reach of diving goalkeeper Alfredo Zuniga (Sr., GK, Salem, OR/South Salem HS). Surafel Wadajo earned an assist on Augustin's goal.

The Lutes moved into the lead at 80:28 when Lucas McCallum scored on an 8-yard shot from the right side into the left corner of the goal. Chad Kearns was credited with an assist on the play.

Willamette outshot Pacific Lutheran, 10-8, but the Lutes held a 5-4 edge in shots on goal. PLU also claimed a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Zuniga of WU and Joe Rayburn of Pacific Lutheran each recorded three saves. Both goalies earned two of their saves in the second half.

Willamette will play at home again on Sunday, Oct. 22, when the Bearcats will take on the University of Puget Sound. Game time is set for 2:30 p.m. (PDT).
