Biola Defeats Willamette, 9-0, in Men's Tennis

Bearcats Will Conclude Spring Break Trip at Caltech on Wednesday

LA MIRADA, Calif. -- Biola University (Calif.) downed Willamette University, 9-0, in a non-conference men's tennis match on Monday, March 25 at the Biola Tennis Center. The Eagles evened up their record at 8-8 on the season. Willamette fell to 2-8.

The Eagles opened the match by winning #2 doubles, as Philip Westwood and Luke Mountain defeated Blake Brash (Jr., Boise, ID/Boise HS) and Shrujan Kalidindi (Jr., Cupertino, CA/Monta Vista HS), 8-1. Biola also won #1 doubles, 8-1, with Tayven Townsend and Brandon Chang moving past Gunnar Lee (Jr., Hilo, HI/St. Joseph HS) and Jacob Blaisdell (Fr., Honolulu, HI/Punahou School).

Willamette's #3 doubles team of Derek Lund (Fr., Helena, MT/Capital HS) and Samuel Rowe (Fr., Andover, MA/Andover HS) battled with Joe Turnquist and Michael Vartuli at #3 doubles, before the Biola team claimed an 8-6 victory.

Townsend and Lee played a competitive match at #1 singles. Townsend took the first set, 6-3, but Lee won the second set, 6-2. They played a super tie-breaker instead of a third set, with Townsend winning the tie-breaker, 10-1.

At #5 singles, Turnquist outlasted Blaisdell 7-5 in the first set and also won the second set 6-1.

The Bearcats will conclude their Spring Break trip with a match at California Institute of Technology on Wednesday, March 25. The action is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. (PDT).
