Wins Three Individual Events in Victory over College of Idaho

SALEM, ORE. -- Willamette University freshman swimmer Annie Marinello (Corvallis, OR/Philomath HS) has been selected as the Northwest Conference Women's Swimming Student-Athlete of the Week for her efforts in the Bearcats' victory over College of Idaho on Saturday, Jan. 12.

Marinello took first place in three individual events and helped WU win the 200-yard medley relay, as the Bearcats downed the Lady Yotes, 121-111.

Her first win of the meet was in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:02.74. Later, she added a triumph in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:34.22. She achieved her third individual win in the 200-yard individual medley, giving WU a 110-105 lead entering the final event of the day.

WU took an early lead at the start of the meet, after Marinello and teammates Michaela Zuber (Fr., Sacramento, CA/Sheldon HS), Malia Santos (Fr., Kailua-Kona, HI/Kealakehe HS) and Erin Parkinson (Jr., Everson, WA/Ferndale HS) were victorious in the the 200-yard medley relay. Marinello swam the second leg, helping Willamette earn a time of 1:59.84 to win by 4.45 seconds.

Marinello claimed sizable victories in all three of her individual wins. She won the 200 freestyle by 6.66 seconds, finished first by 12.26 seconds in the 200 breaststroke and achieved a margin of 14.22 seconds in the 200 I.M.

Willamette is 2-5 in dual matches the season. The Bearcats will travel to Forest Grove, Ore. to take on Northwest Conference rival Pacific University on Friday, Jan. 18 at 6 p.m. (PST). WU will host Lewis & Clark College on Saturday, Jan. 19 at 1 p.m. It will be Senior Day for the Bearcats.
