Lum Named NWC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee President for 2015-16

Swimmer from Willamette Chosen for Leadership Post

SALEM, ORE. -- Willamette University men's swimmer Andrew Lum (Jr., Honolulu, HI/Punahou School) has been elected president of the Northwest Conference Student-Athlete Advisory Committee for the 2015-16 academic year. Lum has competed for the Bearcats in swimming for three seasons. and is currently the secretary of the SAAC at Willamette.

The SAAC on each campus works as a liaison between student-athletes, coaches and athletic staff, as well as professors, academic officers and alumni. In addition, the SAAC organizes community service activities and encourages each team to support other teams on campus.

Northwest Conference SAAC members support community service projects throughout the NWC and work to solve issues of importance to athletes at all nine NWC member institutions.

Lum will serve as president from August 1, 2015 until the end of the academic year in late spring of 2016.

"I am more than honored for the opportunity to be the NWC SAAC president," Lum said. "As conference SAAC president, I hope to lay the foundation for the growth of collaboration not only within our institution's student-athlete population, but extend that partnership to administration and alumni."

As a swimmer at Willamette this season, Lum reached the consolation finals at the NWC Championships in the 100-yard butterfly and the 200-yard butterfly. He placed 13th in the 100 butterfly and was 15th in the 200 butterfly. He was a co-captain of the Willamette men's team.

"I have had the opportunity to watch Andrew grow the last three years as his swim coach and as one of his SAAC advisors," WU Head Coach Leslie Shevlin said. "He has excelled as a leader in both areas of his life. Andrew wants to make athletic leadership his career. I think taking on the role of NWC president will be a great experience for him."

Lum is thrilled to have the opportunity to work with other NWC SAAC members during his term as president.

"I look forward to this great experience ahead of me and the potential it has to influence my aspiring career in sports administration," Lum said. "I thank Coach Shevlin for encouraging me to join SAAC, and guiding me to this very moment."
