Wins Two Events to Help Bearcats Take First Place at Willamette Invitational

SALEM, ORE. -- Willamette University swimmer Mark Yuvienco (Fr., San Jose, CA/Bellarmine College Prep) has been named Northwest Conference Men's Swimming Student-Athlete of the Week after helping the Bearcats earn the Willamette Invitational team title on Saturday, Nov. 22. Yuvienco won two events during the meet.

The Willamette men claimed the team championship with a score of 201.5. College of Idaho finished in second place with 171 points and Pacific University was third at 157.5.

Yuvienco took first place in the men's 100-yard butterfly in 53.23 seconds. He won by 1.45 seconds over Tyler Maryon from College of Idaho, who placed second in 54.68 seconds. Yuvienco also won the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:56.07, leading a 1-2 finish for the Bearcats. Teammate Dan Aki (So., Union City, CA/James Logan HS) was second in 2:00.14.

In addition to his two individual events, Yuvienco swam on Willamette's 200-yard freestyle relay team. The relay placed third in 1:32.38, but was only 2.15 seconds behind the winning relay. Yuvienco swam the anchor leg for the Bearcats.

The Bearcats have completed is fall semester schedule. The WU swimming teams will participate in winter training in San Diego, Calif., from Jan. 2-8, 2015. The Bearcats will compete at home again on Jan. 10 in an exhibition meet against Southwestern Oregon Community College.
