The following represent the vision for the swimming program at Willamette University:
A Highly regarded Division III program, competitive on a conference and national level.
Coaches who:
- Earn respect of the team through honesty, congruency between words and actions, and excellence in teaching.
- Communicates well with the student-athletes.
- Constantly strives to improve themselves.
Student-Athletes who:
- Recognize the preeminence of academics.
- Love swimming and compete and train with passion and fun.
- Are committed to the program and its goals.
- Take great pride in being a member of the TEAM and their goals.
A Team which:
- Is consistently more prepared, confident, focused and composed than our opponents, and has a lot of fun.
- Rallies together during meets and encourages teammates after tough races.
- Is willing to be held accountable.
- Trusts each other, its leadership and its coaches.
- Possesses the following norms for coach and student-athlete behavior:
- Creates, fosters and maintains relationships centered on interpersonal supportiveness and the understanding of individual differences.
- Motivation to practice effectively, meeting daily goals and constantly improving.
- Meets each event with a high level of intensity and integrity.
Coaches and student-athletes who treat facilities, equipment, and gear in such a way that is respectful of the program and University.
Finally, as a result of participating in the program, student-athletes gain the following:
- Fond memories of times spent with good people.
- Experience with success as a group foremost, but also on a personal level.
- Mental skills and perspectives that will be of value throughout their lives, such as personal leadership and operating in a competitive group setting.
