SALEM, Ore. -- Madison Ballard (Fr., G, Monroe, OR/Monroe HS) hit a game-tying 3-pointer for Willamette University with just over one second left in regulation, but Warner Pacific University outscored the Bearcats 13-8 in overtime to grab an 81-76 win on Saturday, Nov. 10 at Cone Field House. Warner Pacific, which competes in the NAIA and the Cascade Collegiate Conference, advanced its record to 2-0 on the season. It was the season-opener for the Bearcats, who are members of NCAA Division III and the Northwest Conference.

Willamette trailed 68-65 late in regulation after Deepika Kapil sank the second of two free throws with about seven seconds left. The Bearcats called a timeout and advanced the ball to the offensive half of court. After Willamette sent the ball in-bounds, Drew Farmer (So., PG, Brookings, OR/Brookings-Harbor HS) found Ballard open in the right corner. Ballard swished her 3-point effort with 1.1 seconds to go.

"It was nice to finally measure ourselves against outside competition," Willamette Head Coach Peg Swadener said. "We need to clean up our fouls and turnovers, but overall I feel there were a lot of good things tonight that we can build on. We new coming into this year that we would need the preseason games to prepare us for conference. While we were disappointed with the loss, being able to take an athletic team like Warner Pacific into overtime will do nothing but help us in the future."

The first quarter was high-scoring and close. There were five ties and seven lead changes during the quarter, which ended with Willamette holding a 22-20 edge. Both teams shot 50% during the quarter, as Willmette made 9 of 18 shots, including 4 of 9 on 3-pointers. The Knights were 6 of 12 from the field and 1 for 1 on 3-pointers.
