Sra Finishes Seventh at NWC Tournament in Women's Golf

Bearcats Place Seventh in Team Standings, End Season in Sixth Place Overall

SUN RIVER, Ore. -- Willamette University women's golfer Taneesh Sra (Jr., Fremont, CA/Mission San Jose HS) finished in seventh place at the 2015 Northwest Conference Tournament as play concluded on Sunday, April 25 at Crosswater Golf Course. Sra shot 160 for the 36-hole tournament with a 78 in the first round and an 82 in the second round.

George Fox University won the NWC Tournament title with a score of 622 (319-303) and also claimed the overall NWC Championship. The Bruins won the tournament by 31 strokes over Whitman College, which finished second at 653 (333-320). Whitworth University was third at 657 (335-322), Pacific Lutheran University placed fourth at 658 (325-333).

Lewis & Clark College was fifth at 675 (336-339), with Linfield College in sixth at 754 (379-375). Willamette followed in seventh place at 780 (382-398), while Pacific University was eighth at 857 (440-417). University of Puget Sound did not compete in the tournament.

The individual title at the NWC Tournament went to Sydney Maluenda from George Fox, who shot 151. She registered a 79 in the first round and tacked on a tournament-low 72 in the second round. Hailey Ostrom of GFU placed second at 154 (79-75) and Lou Points from Whitman was third at 155 (79-76).

Claire Burke of Lewis & Clark and Loreece Magsanide of GFU tied for fourth place. Each carded 156, with Bruke shooting 80-76 and Magsanide shooting 77-79. Desirae Haselwood from Pacific Lutheran was sixth at 159 (79-80). She was followed by Sra in seventh at 160. Kristin Elich of George Fox was eighth at 161 (84-77) and Nicole Lomax of Whitworth was ninth at 162 (77-85).

In addition to Sra, other Bearcats competing the NWC Tournament were LettaJoe Gallup (Jr., Alameda, CA/Holy Names HS), Maddi Barnett (Fr., Boise, Idaho/Timberline HS) and Holly Steele (Fr., Stayton, OR/Stayton HS). Gallup carded a score of 174 (85-89). Barnett shot 180 (88-92) and Steele shot 266 (131-135).

Each year, the NWC uses a combination of three tournaments to determine the overall team champion. The NWC Fall Classic is worth one-fourth of the title and the NWC Spring Classic is worth one-fourth. The NWC Tournament counts for one-half of the title.

George Fox won the Fall Classic and placed third at the Spring Classic before winning the NWC Tournament. The Bruins grabbed the NWC Championship with 30 points. Whitman took second at 28.5, while Whitworth was third at 25.5. Pacific Lutheran placed fourth at 19 points, with Lewis & Clark in fifth at 16, Willamette in sixth at 11, Linfield in seventh at 8, Pacific in eighth at 4 and Puget Sound in ninth with 2 points.

The conference announced the 2015 All-NWC Women's Golf Team following the tournament. Selections were determined by a point system using results from the Fall Classic, Spring Classic and NWC Tournament.

Sra was named to First Team All-NWC after earning Second Team All-NWC honors in 2013 and 2014. Joining Sra on the First Team this season were Maluenda, Magsanide and Ostrom from George Fox, Points from Whitman, and Burke from Lewis & Clark. Maluenda was named NWC Player of the Year.

Second Team All-NWC recognition went to Lomax of Whitman, Elich of GFU, Haselwood from PLU, Phoebe Nguyen and Kelly Sweeney of Whitman and Chelsea Bayley of Whitworth.
