Willamette Golfers Barnett and Towner Conclude NWC Spring Classic

BREMERTON, Wash. -- Maddi Barnett (Jr., Boise, ID/Timberline HS) shot 89 for the second day in a row and tied for 20th place, as the Northwest Conference Spring Classic in women's golf ended with the final 18 holes on Sunday, April 9 at the Gold Mountain Golf Club. Barnett finished at 178 for the 36-hole event.

In addition, Lexi Towner (Fr., Chico, CA/Chico HS) of Willamette carded back-to-back scores of 98 to finish at 196.

A total of 42 golfers participated in the women's competition this weekend. Shiyang Fan from Whitman College topped the individual standings at 151. She shot a 76 in the first round a 75 in the second round for a total of 151. She earned first place by four strokes over Kristin Elich of George Fox University, who claimed second place at  155 (83-72).

George Fox won the team title with a score of 640 (322-318). The Bruins finished two strokes in front of Whitman, which took second at 642 (323-319). Whitworth University edged out Lewis & Clark College for third place by a single stroke. The Pirates shot 679 (336-343), while Lewis and Clark placed fourth at 680 (342-338).

Pacific Lutheran University was fifth at 698 (350-348), with Pacific University in sixth at 760 (385-375), University of Puget Sound in seventh at 770 (391-379), and Linfield College in eighth at 771 (396-375). Willamette did not field a complete team.

Shiyang Fan from Whitman won the individual championship with a score of 151. She carded a 76 in the first round and a 75 in the second round. Kristin Elich of George Fox placed  second at 155, with an 83 on Saturday, followed by a tournament-low 72 on Sunday. Phoebe Nguyen of Whitman was third at 156 (80-76).

Fourth place as a two-way tie between Jeankie-Jhen Aczon of PLU and Sydney Maluenda of GFU, both at 160. Aczon shot 81-79, while Maluenda shot 79-81. Iris Kawada from George Fox was sixth at 161 (79-82) and Claire Burke of Lewis & Clark was seventh at 163 (80-83).

A two-way tie for eighth place included Maggie Peters of Whitworth and Lou Points of Whitman. Both golfers shot 164 for the tournament with an 83 in the first round and an 81 in the second round.

The Bearcats will be back in action at the Willamette Spring Thaw on Friday, April 14 and Saturday, April 15. Willamette will be hosting the tournament at the OGA Golf Course in Woodburn, Oregon.
