Barnett Finishes in Tie for 24th Place at Culturame Classic

CANBY, Ore. -- Willamette University golfer Maddi Barnett (Sr., Boise, ID/Timberline HS) shot an 86 on Sunday, Oct. 8 in the second round of the Culturame Classic to move into a tie for 24th place in the final individual standings at the Willamette Valley Country Club. Barnett, who carded an 89 in the first round on Saturday, earned a 36-hole score of 175.

Kristin Elich from tournament host George Fox University won the individual title by defeating Phoebe Nguyen of Whitman College on the first playoff hole after both golfers shot 150. Elich recorded back-to-back round of 75, while Nguyen shot 78 in the first round and then achieved the low round of the tournament with an even-par 72 in the second round.

A pair of George Fox athletes tied for third place at 151. Janelle Decker shot 75-76, while Iris Kawada shot 77-74. Shiyang Fan of Whitman and Caroline Ordian from University of Redlands (Calif.) each shot 79-73 to tie for fifth palce at 152.

Rachel Drgastin from GFU earned seventh place at 157 (81-76), while Maggie Peters of Whitworth University was eighth at 158 (82-76). Ninth place was a tie at 160 between Tianna Brown for GFU and Briana Finau from Pacific University. Brown carded 78-82 and Finau recorded 79-81. Overall 44 golfers competed in the tournament.

Barnett was the top finisher among Willamette's three entries. Lexi Towner (So., Chico, CA/Chico HS) shot 87-90--177 to take 26th place. Camy Pickworth (Fr., Columbus, OH/Columbus School For Girls) shot 97 and 95 for a two-day score of 192.

George Fox won the team title with a score of 606 (305-301). The Bruins' score of 301 on Sunday was the low round of the tournament. Whitman improved from a 326 in the first round to register a score of 305 in the second round, as the Blukes took second place at 631.

Whitworth was third with a score of 660 (334-326), while Redlands placed fourth at 666 (341-325). Lewis & Clark College followed in fifth place at 722 (365-357), and University of California, Santa Cruz was sixth at 743 (380-363). Pacific finished with a score of 750 (378-372). Linfield and Willamette did not field complete teams.

The Bearcats will be back in action at the Northwest Conference Fall Classic on Saturday, Oct. 14 and Sunday, Oct. 15 at Quail Valley Golf Course in Banks, Oregon. Pacific will be hosting the tournament.
