Towner Shoots an 86 on Second Day of PLU Invitational

SPANAWAY, Wash. -- Lexi Towner (Jr., Chico, CA/Chico HS) of Willamette University carded a score of 86 in the second round of the PLU Invitational on Sunday, Sept. 23 at Lake Spanaway Golf Course. The strong second round gave Towner an overall score of 183 for the 36-hole event.

Towner shot a 97 in the first round, but improved by 11 strokes on Sunday. Teammate Katerin Vasquez (So., Indio, CA/Coachella Valley HS) shot 117 on Saturday and improved by 14 strokes to 103 in the second round.

Whitworth University won the team title with a score of 640 (329-311). Southwestern Oregon Community College placed second at 661 (328-333), while Bellevue College (Wash.) finished third at 667 (333-334). University of Puget Sound was fourth at 686 (340-346), just three strokes in front of host Pacific Lutheran University at 689 (344-345). Pacific University was sixth at 694 (345-349) and Spokane Community College was seventh at 706 (359-347). Willamette and Linfield College did not enter complete teams.

Medalist honors went to Maggie Peters of Whitworth who shot 147. She carded a 77 in the first round an then shot a 2-under-par 70 in the second round. Avery Gill from Southwestern Oregon was second at 155 (79-76). Emma Torres of Spokane CC placed third at 158 (82-76). Allie Slingsby from Whitworth took fourth place with a score of 161 (81-80). Bronte Polette of Bellevue was fifth at 163 (84-79).

Willamette will compete at the Culturame Classic on Saturday, Oct. 6 and Sunday, Oct. 7. The tournament will be hosted by George Fox University at the Willamette Valley country Club in Canby, Oregon.
