Bearcats Set Scoring Record in 23-3 Win over California Lutheran

SALEM, Ore. -- Tati Klenk (Sr., ATT, Truckee, CA/Tahoe Truckee HS) scored six goals and one assist, while Catie Kawamura (Sr., ATT, San Diego, CA/San Diego International Studies) and Maddie Garcia (Sr., MID, Encinitas, CA/San Dieguito Academy) each tallied five goals, as Willamette University set the school record for scoring in a 23-3 victory over California Lutheran University at Sparks Field on Tuesday, April 4. The Bearcats broke Willamette's previous scoring record, set earlier this year in a 22-8 win over Corban University on Feb. 15.

The win over California Lutheran improved Willamette's record to 8-4 on the season. The Regals dropped to 0-9 overall.

In addition to the multi-point scoring by Klenk, Kawamura, and Garcia, the Bearcats received three goals and four assists from Lily Bachiochi (So., ATT, Henderson, NV/Coronado HS), plus two goals by Claire Kisielnicki (Fy., ATT, Manitou Springs, CO/Manitou Springs HS). Shea Richardson-Pepper (So., DEF/MID, San Diego, CA/Scripps Ranch HS) and Brooklynn Pearl (Fy., MID, Eugene, OR/Willamette HS) each scored one goal.

Meghan Angus led the Regals with two goals, and Sydney Shin scored one goal for CLU. Giselle Bonilla supplied one assist.

The Bearcats scored four goals in the first five minutes and held an 8-1 advantage at the end of the first quarter. WU's first four goals were scored by four players, as Klenk, Kisielnicki, Kawamura, and Richardson-Pepper hit the net. Bachiochi added an unassisted goal with 8:51 left in the first quarter before California Lutheran scored its first goal on a shot by Angus at the 7:31 mark.

Kawamura put in a player-advantage goal with 6:00 remaining in the quarter, and Garcia and Klenk each added a goal before the end of the period. Willamette outscored California Lutheran 6-1 in the second quarter, including two goals each from Klenk and Garcia, as the Bearcats built a 14-2 halftime lead.

WU earned five goals in the third quarter, while keeping the Regals from scoring. Klenk produced the third and fourth goals on free position shots at 4:41 and 2:21. Her first goal in the third quarter also was a player-advantage goal. The Bearcats were two for three in player-advantage situations. The Bearcats outscored CLU 4-1 in the fourth quarter. Angus registered the Regal's only goal of the quarter on a free position shot and a player-advantage opportunity with 2:30 remaining.

The Bearcats outshot the Regals 36-13, including a 30-8 margin in shots on goal. WU goalkeeper Shelby Sawyer (Sr., GK, Marysville, WA/Bio Med Academy) registered five saves and advanced her record to 7-4 on the season. Goalie Bella Bravo of California Lutheran made seven saves.

For Willamette, Kawamura led all players with 10 draw controls, while Richardson-Pepper added six. Shin topped CLU with five draw controls. WU achieved an overall edge of 19-10 on draws. WU also concluded the game with an 18-14 margin in ground balls, as Richardson-Pepper, Kawamura, Bachiochi, and Jade Kampen (Sr., DEF, Eugene, OR/South Eugene HS) each contributed three. Katilyn Gill and Leila Bauwens each picked up three ground balls for the Regals.

Willamette will take on Northwest Conference opponent Pacific University on Saturday, April 8. Game time at Sparks Field is scheduled for 11 a.m. (PDT).
