NEWBERG, Ore. -- Senior attackers Catie Kawamura (San Diego, CA/San Diego International Studies) and Tati Klenk (Truckee, CA/Tahoe Truckee HS) combined to score seven goals against George Fox University in the first-ever NWC Tournament Championship game on Sunday, April 23, but the Bruins defeated the Bearcats, 20-12, at the Austin Sports Complex. Kawamura produced four goals and Klenk contributed three goals.

GFU, now 17-1, claimed the NWC Tournament title and received the NWC's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III National Tournament. Willamette concluded a very successful season with a 13-5 record, including a tie for second place in the NWC regular season standings at 9-3.

"The team played with pride and grit today. Our seniors rallied and led the charge," Willlamette Head Women's Lacrosse Coach Sarah Lautenbach said. "As a coaching staff, we will never forget their efforts and competitive spirit that led us to that point. While I could talk about all the challenges of the year, I'd rather focus on how we showed up, made no excuses, and figured out a way to succeed all season. Despite the score of the game, the team was not afraid to win or lose. They had the courage to show up to compete for all 60 minutes. I know they will never forget this experience."

Willamette, George Fox, Whitman College, and Whitworth University were the four teams to qualify for the first-ever NWC Tournament in women's lacrosse. In the semifinals on Saturday, April 22, Willamette edged Whitman 14-13 in overtime and George Fox downed Whitworth 20-2.
