Sewall Earns Shutout as Willamette Ties Redlands 0-0 in Two Overtimes

SALEM, Ore. -- Willamette University and the University of Redlands played to a 0-0 tie in two overtimes in a women's soccer game on Saturday, Sept. 5 at Sparks Field. The Bearcats moved to 0-1-1 on the season. Redlands is now 1-0-1.

The best scoring chance for either team was in the second half at 61:02 when Cassie Lively of Redlands hit the left post with a 20-yard shot from just outside the right edge of the penalty area. The ball struck the inside of the post, then rebounded across the goal mouth. A follow shot by Molly Boyle went wide right.

WU goalkeeper Emily Sewall (Jr., Petaluma, CA/Casa Grande HS) recorded three saves to earn a complete-game shutout. Hannah Menk registered two saves in the first half for Redlands. Lexi Felix, who played the final 65 minutes in goal for the Bulldogs, achieved one save.

Felix's save took place on a shot by Marley Duncan (So., F, Pukalani, HI/Kamehameha School) at 104:46 in the second overtime, several seconds after a corner kick for the Bearcats.

The game ended with each team holding similar statistics. Willamette and Redlands each took nine shots and each squad placed three shots on goal. Both teams had three corner kicks and each team made three saves in goal.

Redlands committed 12 fouls and received two yellow cards. Willamette had eight fouls and no yellow cards.

Each team took two shots in one of the overtimes and placed one of the shots on goal. Redlands managed its two shots in the first overtime, while WU earned two shots in the second overtime.

In addition to Sewall in goal, other Bearcats who played all 110 minutes were Madelynn Ellis (Jr., D, Lake Oswego, OR/Lake Oswego HS), Jaclyn Parnell (Jr., D, West Richland, WA/Richland HS), Jill Phillips (Sr., D/GK, Fairbanks, AK/West Valley HS) and Emma Sanders (Jr., M, Kennwick, WA/Southridge HS).

Redlands players who saw action for all 110 minutes were defenders Sammie Burghardt, Sam Keary and Erin Schlosser, as well as Lively in the midfield.

Willamette will play two road games next weekend. The Bearcats will take on Whittier College in Whittier, California, on Friday, Sept. 11 at 5 p.m. (PDT). WU will compete against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in Claremont, California, on Sunday, Sept. 13 at 11 a.m. (PDT).
