California Lutheran Remains Undefeated with 2-0 Win over Bearcats

SALEM, Ore. -- California Lutheran University scored a goal in each half to move past Willamette University, 2-0, in a battle of two previously undefeated team. The Regals advanced their record to 3-0 on the season. Willamette dropped to 2-1.

Ryley Settles scored the game's first goal for CLU at 28:37. She shot from 12 yards out. Willamette goalkeeper Emily Sewall (Sr., GK, Petaluma, CA/Casa Grande HS) deflected the shot, but it went into the net. Bri Pinal earned an assist on the play.

Willamette outshot the Regals, 5-4, in the first half, but only on shot was on frame. Emma Sanders (Sr., M, Kennewick, WA/Southridge HS) took the shot on goal at 37:15. It was prevented from reaching the net when it was knocked away by a defender.

The Bearcats had several scoring chances in the second half, but couldn't score a tying goal. Sanders had another shot stopped by a defender at 46:12 following a corner kick. Later, at 66:16, Emmy Manset (Jr., F, Ventura, CA/Foothill Technology HS) send in a shot that went off the post.

California Lutheran added an insurance goal on a shot by Katelyn Kimball at 81:40. Kimball's shot was from 8-yard out after a shot by Sarah Wardle was blocked. Wardle earned an assist on the play.

The Regals achieved an 8-7 margin in total shots and a 4-2 edge in shots on goal. CLU also earned a 6-5 advantage in corner kicks. Settles took three shots for the Regals, while Sanders recorded three shots for the Bearcats.

CLU goalkeeper Coral Hasley registered the shutout, but did not make a save. Sewall provided WU with one save. One shot by the Regals was kept out of the goal by a defender.

Willamette will return to Sparks Field on Sunday, Sept. 11, to take on Oregon Institute of Technology. Game time is set for 12 p.m. (PDT).
