Gilroy Scores Goal Late in First Half, as Bearcats Shut Out Boxers, 1-0

FOREST GROVE, Ore. -- Jackie Gilroy (Fy., F/M, Mercer Island, WA/Mercer Island HS) scored the game's only goal with 1:03 left in the first half to lead Willamette University to a 1-0 victory over Pacific University on Saturday, Oct. 26 in a Northwest Conference women's soccer game at Ledbetter Field. It was Gilroy's third goal of the season.

Willamette improved to 9-5-1 overall and to 8-2-1 in the NWC. Pacific dropped to 3-10-1 on the season, 1-9-1 in the NWC.

The goal followed some sustained pressure by the Bearcats, who earned corner kicks at 41:21 and 43:07. Gilroy scored in a scramble in front of the net at 43:57, as she shot the ball into the upper right corner of the goal. Julia Fecteau (So., F, Bend, OR/Bend HS) recorded an assist on the play.

WU outshot the Boxers, 14-6, for the game, including 7-5 in shots on goal. The Bearcats took seven shots in each half. Willamette gianed a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.

Four Bearcats --- Emma Blackburn (So., F, Los Altos, CA/Saint Francis HS), Shanna Keil (Sr., F, Danville, CA/San Ramon Valley HS), Clara Mattison (Fy., M, Burlington, WA/Burlington Edison HS) and Fionn Fortune (Sr., M/F, Alexandria, VA/St. Stephen's & St. Agnes/Hamilton Coll.) -- each registered two shots for Willamette. Courtney Olsen contributed two shots for Pacific.

Kristen Barclay (Sr., GK, Kenmore, WA/Cedar Park Christian School) and Grasiela Quevedo-Ramos (Jr., GK, Salem, OR/West Salem HS) each played 45 minutes in goal for the Bearcats to split the shutout. Barclay was credited with two saves in the first half and Quevedo-Ramos added three saves in the second half. It was Willamette's seventh shutout of the season. Barclay now has 18 solo shutouts and 13 combined shutouts in her career. Saya Brown of GFU made six saves, including four in the second half.

Quevedo-Ramos recorded a save just 1:10 into the second half, when she stopped a shot by Karla Herrera-Zarate. Later, Quevedo-Ramos provided saves at 70:53 on a shot by Brooke Nakamura and at 85:21 on a 32-yard shot by Olsen. Quevedo-Ramos has nine shared shutouts in her career, with three each in 2017, 2018 and 2019.

Willamette will play at the University of Puget Sound on Sunday, Oct. 27. Kickoff is slated for 12 p.m. (PDT). The Bearcats and the Loggers tied 0-0 in two overtimes on Sept. 29 in Salem, Oregon.
