(WOMEN'S TENNIS) KERRVILLE, TEXAS -- Tiffany Kam (Jr., Pearl City, HI/Punahou HS) won #1 singles and teamed with Alaine Anderson (Jr., Santa Ana, CA/Foothills HS) to win #1 doubles, as Willamette University edged Schreiner University, 4-3, on Wednesday, March 28. The win improved the Bearcats, who compete in NCAA Division III, to 4-10 on the season, while Schreiner, which competes in the NAIA, fell to 0-11.
Kam defeated Katrina Priess at #1 singles, 6-4, 6-1. The win for Kam and Anderson at #1 doubles was by an 8-5 score over Stephanie Reed and Patty Santiago. Neither team had a full squad available, so the teams played just five singles matches and two doubles matches.
Anderson also won at #2 singles, where she earned a 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) win over Reed. Willamette also received a victory from Christy Newell (Jr., Vancouver, WA/Jesuit HS), who defeated Tina Philippi at #5 singles, 6-1, 6-1.
The closest match was at #2 doubles. Schreiner's team of Amanda Alvarado and Priess slipped past Abby Funabiki (So., Pullman, WA/Pullman HS) and Alyssa Morrison (Fr., Anacortes, WA/Anacortes HS) in a tie-breaker, 9-8 (7-5).
Schreiner also picked up singles wins at the #3 and #4 positions.
Willamette will play at Pacific University in Forest Grove, Ore., on Friday, March 30 at 4 p.m. (PDT). The Bearcats host Pacific Lutheran University at the WU Tennis Courts on Saturday, March 31 at 1 p.m. (PDT). Both of this weekend's matches are part of round-robin play in the Northwest Conference.
