(WOMEN'S TENNIS) TACOMA, WASH. -- Pacific Lutheran University defeated Willamette University, 7-2, in a Northwest Conference match at the University of Puget Sound Tennis Pavilion on Saturday, Feb. 24, but it wasnt easy for the Lutes. PLU needed a tie-breaker to win the #3 doubles match and two of the Lutes four wins in singles included a set decided by a 7-5 score. The Lutes improved to 3-0 on the season (3-0 in the NWC), while Willamette fell to 2-4 overall, 2-2 in the NWC.
PLU swept the doubles flights, including a 9-8 win by Bria Smith and Roz Currie over Willamettes team of Alyssa Morrison (Fr., Anacortes, WA/Anacortes HS) and Abby Funabiki (So., Pullman, WA/Pullman HS). Smith and Currie won the set with a 7-5 win in the tie-breaker. At #1 doubles, PLU achieved an 8-5 victory, as Erika Feltus and Nicole Petrzelka outlasted Tiffany Kam (Jr., Pearl City, HI/Punahou School) and Alaine Anderson (Jr., Santa Ana, CA/Foothills HS). PLUs #2 doubles team of Ashley Coats and Megan Proffitt defeated Susan Butler (Sr., Boise, ID/Boise HS) and Becca Younger (So., Albuquerque, NM/Sandia Prep), 8-4.
Willamette won the #3 and #4 singles matches. Anderson was the victor at #3 singles. She won in straight sets over Currie, 6-4, 6-1. In the #4 singles match, Morrison earned the win for WU, as she rallied to defeat Smith, 2-6, 6-4, 11-9 (tie-breaker instead of third set).
PLU faced two other strong challenges in singles. At #5 singles, Coats of PLU edged Younger in two close sets, 7-5, 6-4. Tracy Fujitani, also from PLU, won #6 singles over A.J. Omens (Fr., Murrieta, CA/Murrieta Valley HS) by squeaking out a 7-5 win in the first set, then sweeping the second set, 6-0.
Willamette will return to action next Saturday (March 3) with a Northwest Conference match at Lewis & Clark College. The match is scheduled to get underway at 10 a.m. (PST) at the L&C Tennis Dome in Portland, Ore.
