Willamette Wins Two of Three Doubles Matches, but Southern Oregon Rallies for 7-2 Victory in Women's Tennis

(WOMEN'S TENNIS) SALEM, ORE. -- Willamette University won two of three doubles matches, but visiting Southern Oregon University swept the six singles matches to rally for a 7-2 victory over the Bearcats on Saturday, Feb. 17 at the Courthouse Tennis Club. Southern Oregon upped its record to 3-0, while Willamette fell to 1-2.

WU took a 2-1 lead after Alaine Anderson (Jr., Santa Ana, CA/Foothills HS) and Tiffany Kam (Jr., Pearl City, HI/Punahou School) defeated Katie Ross and Becca Weicher at #1 doubles, 8-4, and Alyssa Morrison (Fr., Anacortes, WA/Anacortes HS) teamed with Emily Elliott (Fr., Woodside, CA/Woodside Prep) to down Mallory Byers and Rachael Malapit at #3 doubles, 8-6. Southern Oregon won #2 doubles, as Julia Efunia and Charlotte Duren defeated Susan Butler (Sr., Boise, ID/Boise HS) and Becca Younger (So., Albuquerque, NM/Sandia Prep), 8-3.

Ross led SOU's comeback in singles with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Anderson at the #1 position. Three more of the singles matches were relatively close, as Duren defeated Morrison in the #3 position, 6-3, 6-3, Byers slipped past Abby Funabiki (So., Pullman, WA/Pullman HS), 6-4, 6-2, at #4 singles and Erin Bruni won #5 singles over A.J. Omens (Fr., Murrieta,CA/Murrieta Valley HS), 6-2, 6-4.

Willamette plays its third match of the weekend on Sunday, Feb. 18 against Whitman College. The NWC match is scheduled to get underway at the Courthouse Tennis Club at 10 a.m. (PST).
