SALEM, ORE. -- After playing three home matches indoors this season, the Willamette University women's tennis team finally had the chance to play outdoors at the WU Tennis Courts on Friday, March 7. Even so, the weather found a way to halt the match before it was fully completed, but not until the Bearcats achieved an insurmountable lead to defeat Pacific University, 5-0.
Willamette, which won all three doubles matches as well as #1 and #2 singles before the match ended, improved to 2-6 overall, 2-5 in the Northwest Conference. Pacific dropped to 0-8 overall, 0-7 in the NWC.
The Willamette #1 doubles team of Alaine Anderson (Sr., Santa Ana, CA/Foothills HS) and Jamie Slonaker (Fr., Bainbridge Island, WA/Bainbridge HS) edged Pacific's top doubles team of Jamie Yoshino and Dayna Wong, 9-7. WU swept #2 doubles, with Abby Funabiki (Jr., Pullman, WA/Pullman HS) and Tiffany Kam (Sr., Pearl City, HI/Punahou School) defeating Sophie Waddington and Tessa Krebs, 8-0.
At #3 double, Alyssa Morrison (So., Anacortes, WA/Anacortes HS) and Samantha Wong (Fr., Honolulu, HI/Iolani HS) of Willamette defeated Sami Richards and Stephanie Velligas. Morrison and Wong won the match, 8-3.
Kam picked up a quick victory for the Bearcats at #1 singles, as she downed Yoshino, 6-2, 6-1. Morrison won at #2 singles over Dayna Wong, 6-3, 6-1.
The Bearcats will return to action on Saturday, March 7, with an NWC match at the University of Puget Sound. Match time is scheduled for 1 p.m. (PST).
