Kuenzli of Linfield Wins Singles Title at Wilson/ITA Women's Tennis Regional

SALEM, ORE. -- Kasey Kuenzli of Linfield College won the singles championship at the Wilson/ITA Women's Tennis Small College Northwest Regional by defeating Amalia Nilsson from Lewis & Clark, 6-4, 6-0 in the finals. The tournament, hosted by Willamette University, began on Friday, Sept. 28 and continued through Sunday, Sept. 30. In doubles, Kuenzli and Sallie Katter of Linfield edged Nilsson and Lisa Harunaga of L&C in the championship match, 9-8 (7-4).

The consolation brackets also were completed on Sunday. In the singles consolation final, Ashley Coats of Pacific Lutheran University defeated Jamie Slonaker of Willamette, 6-1, 6-2. The doubles consolation final was won by Molly Nelson and Kelli Sides of Linfield, who defeated fellow Wildcats Jeanna Parks and Andrea Peterson, 8-2. All of Sunday's action took place at the Courthouse Tennis Club due to weather conditions.

For Willamette, Tiffany Kam (Sr., Pearl City, HI/Punahou HS) and Alaine Anderson (Sr., Steamboat Springs, CO/Foothills HS) each advanced to the quarterfinals in singles. Kam lost to Nilsson, 6-2, 6-0, and Anderson was defeated by Kuenzli, 6-2, 6-1, in the quarterfinal round. Anderson's loss snapped her 15-match winning streak in singles. Her streak in singles during team dual matches remained at 13 in a row. Kam and Anderson also reached the quarterfinals in doubles, before falling to Margo Lentz and Elise Otto of Whitman, 8-4.

In the consolation singles bracket, WU's Slonaker made the finals after advancing on a default in the semifinals by Alyssa Wolf from the University of Puget Sound. Becca Younger (Jr., Albuquerque, NM/Sandia Prep) of Willamette lost to Coats, 6-3, 6-1, in the consolation semifinals.

The Bearcats were represented by Christy Newell (Sr., Vancouver, WA/Jesuit HS) and Samantha Wong in the doubles consolation semifinals. They were defeated by Nelson and Sides, 8-0.

Kuenzli in singles and whichever team wins the doubles championship match will advance into the ITA National Small College Championships presented by Outback Steakhouse and the United State Tennis Association. The ITA Nationals are set for Oct. 11-14, 2007 in Mobile, Ala.
