PORTLAND, ORE. -- Lewis & Clark College won two of three doubles matches, then claimed four of six singles matches, as the Pioneers defeated visiting Willamette University, 6-3, in Northwest Conference women's tennis action on Saturday, March 1. L&C improved to 5-3 overall, 5-1 in the NWC, while Willamette fell to 1-6 overall, 1-5 in the conference.
Samantha Wong (Fr., Honolulu, HI/Iolani HS) of Willamette was victorious at #6 singles and at #3 doubles. She won her singles match over Teresa Kiemnec in a tie-breaker played instead of a third set, 6-0, 4-6, 10-7. In doubles, Won teamed with Jamie Slonaker (Fr., Bainbridge Island, WA/Bainbridge HS) to defeat Paige Earhart and Alix Dixon of L&C, 8-4.
At #1 singles, Amalia Nilsson of L&C defeated Tiffany Kam (Sr. Pearl City, HI/Punahou School), 6-0, 6-2. LIsa Harunaga won for Lewis & Clark at #2 singles, as she downed Alaine Anderson (Sr., Santa Ana, CA/Foothills HS), 6-2, 6-0.
Willamette's Alyssa Morrison (So., Anacortes , WA/Anacortes HS) gave Whitney DeBree of L&C a solid battle at #3 singles, but DeBree eventually prevailed, 7-5, 6-3. Abby Funabiki (Jr., Pullman, WA/Pullman HS) provided the Bearcats with a victory at #4 singles in straight sets over Paige Earhart, 6-3, 6-1.
The Bearcats are scheduled to return to action on Friday, March 7, when they will host Pacific University. Match time at the WU Tennis Courts is set for 3 p.m. (PST).
