SALEM, ORE. -- Whitman College swept the singles matches and the Missionaries defeated Willamette University, 8-1, in a Northwest Conference match at the Courthouse Tennis Center on Saturday, Feb 23. Whitman improved to 3-3 overall, 3-2 in the NWC. Willamette dropped to 0-4 overall, 0-3 in the conference.
Willamette's lone victory was earned by Alyssa Morrison (So., Anacortes, WA/Anacortes HS) and Abby Funabiki (Jr., Pullman, WA/Pullman HS) at #3 doubles, as they rallied to defeat Divneet Kaur and Jacquie Frank, 8-6. Morrison and Funabiki trailed 6-3 before winning five games in a row.
At #1 singles, Elise Otto of Whitman downed Tiffany Kam (Sr., Pearl City, HI/Punahou School) 6-1 in the first set, then earned a slim 7-5 win in the second set. Another close set took place at #6 singles, as Alex Robinson of Whitman edged Jamie Slonaker (Fr., Bainbridge Island, WA/Bainbridge HS) of WU, 7-6 (7-4 in the tie-breaker). Robinson went on to win the match by downing Slonaker 6-2 in the second set.
The Bearcats will play at George Fox University in Newberg, Ore., on Friday, Feb. 29. Match time is scheduled for 2 p.m. (PST).
