SALEM, ORE. -- Willamette University freshman Shannon Palmer (Salem, OR/Sprague HS) has reached the semifinals in both singles and doubles at the Wilson/ITA Small College Northwest Regional Women's Tennis Championship, hosted by Willamette. The three-day tournament will conclude on Monday, Sept. 29.
On Sunday, winner's side matches in singles and doubles were played at the WU Tennis Courts, while consolation matches were played at the Salem Swim and Tennis Club. On Monday, all of the action -- semifinals and finals on both sides of the singles and doubles brackets -- will be played at the WU Tennis Courts.
Palmer, seeded #4 in singles, will take on Rachel Burns of Whitworth University, seeded #2, in one of the semifinal matches. The other semifinal features #1 seed Elise Otto of Whitman College against the #6 seed, Mya Towne of Whitworth. Both matches will start at 8:30 a.m. (PDT), with the winners playing for the Regional title at 10:30 a.m.
In doubles, Palmer and Abby Funabiki (Sr., Pullman, WA/Pullman HS) will represent Willamette in the semifinals. They will take on the #2-seeded team of Cat Goya and Megan Yoshimoto from Pacific University. The remaining semifinal match will be played between #1-seeded Katie Oost and Otto of Whitman and #4-seeded Sarah Click and Abby Olbrich of Linfield College. Funabiki and Palmer were the only unseeded team to reach the semifinals.
