Palmer Selected NWC Student-Athlete of the Week

SALEM, ORE. -- Shannon Palmer (Fr., Salem, OR/Sprague HS) of Willamette University has been selected as the Northwest Conference Women's Tennis Student-Athlete of the Week for the week ending April 5. Palmer helped Willamette go 2-0, as the Bearcats registered an 8-1 win over Pacific Lutheran University and a 9-0 victory over George Fox University.

Palmer was 2-0 at #1 singles and also went 2-0 at #1 doubles with teammate Jamie Slonaker (So., Bainbridge Island, WA/Bainbridge HS). Palmer defeated Ashley Brooks of PLU, 6-1, 6-1, and downed Mollee Robinson of GFU, 6-1, 6-1. In doubles, Palmer and Slonaker easily defeated Brooks and Caitlyn Hoerr of PLU, 8-2, and outlasted Robinson and Corinne Borrelli of GFU, 8-6.

For the season, Palmer is 8-6 in singles. She has won four of her last five matches.

Willamette is 7-11 overall and 6-9 in the Northwest Conference. The Bearcats have clinched a berth in the NWC Tournament, which will be held April 17-18 in Yakima, Wash.

WU will close out the regular season with a match at the University of Puget Sound on Saturday, April 11. Match time is set for 1 p.m. (PDT).
