SALEM, ORE. -- Willamette University defeated the University of Oregon Club team in a women's tennis exhibition match on Saturday, Feb. 5, at the Courthouse Tennis Club. The Bearcats won the match, 6-3.
Natalia Agarycheva (Sr., Vancouver, WA/Prairie HS/U. of Northern Colorado) won #1 singles for the Bearcats. She defeated Allison Bostrom, 6-1, 6-2.
The U of O Club team prevailed at #2 and #3 singles. Lucia Ju defeated Shanon Palmer (Jr., Salem, OR/Sprague HS), 6-2, 6-4. Amanda Lee from U of O downed Fabi Dieguez (Jr., Salem, OR/Sprague HS/Oregon State Univ.), 6-3, 6-2.
Sabrina Gutierrez (Fr., Newbury Park, CA/Newbury Park HS) of Willamette was victorious at #4 singles, as she won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1, against Hayley Standage. Also for the Bearcats, Katie Huber (So., St. Peter MIN/St. Peter HS) at #5 singles and Emily Funabiki (Fr., Pullman, WA/Pullman HS) at #6 singles defeated their opponents in straight sets.
Willamette built a 2-1 lead during doubles. Agarycheva and Palmer claimed the #1 doubles match, 8-3, over Lee and Standage. At #3 doubles, Huber and Emily Bee (Jr., Portland, OR/Lincoln HS) outlasted Emily Schlaffy and Maggie Andrews from the U of O Club, 8-5. Bostrom and Ju from U of O won #2 doubles over Dieguez and Kate Thurber (So., Salem, OR/South Salem HS), 8-0.
WU will open the regular season on Saturday, Feb. 12 by hosting the University of Puget Sound in a Northwest Conference match. Action is set to begin at 12:15 p.m. (PST) at the Courthouse.
