Top Player for Bearcats Earns Record of 2-0 in Singles and 2-0 in Doubles

SALEM, ORE. -- Sabrina Gutierrez (Sr., Newbury Park, CA/Newbury Park HS) of Willamette University has been selected as the Northwest Conference Women's Tennis Student-Athlete of the Week for matches played between March 3 and March 9. Gutierrez achieved a record of 2-0 in singles and 2-0 in doubles, while leading the Bearcats to a pair of team victories.

In Willamette's 6-3 win over Lewis & Clark College on Friday, March 7, Gutierrez downed Claudia Lew, 6-1, 6-4, in #1 singles, and teamed with Denise Poltavski (Jr., Woodland Hills, CA/El Camino Real HS) to defeat Lew and Esa Grigsby in doubles, 8-1.

One day later against the College of Idaho, in a 5-4 victory for the Bearcats, Gutierrez won #1 singles over Shae Stults, 6-0, 6-3. Gutierrez and Poltavski combined for an 8-2 triumph against Stults and Emily Tesnohlidek at #1 doubles.

So far this spring, Gutierrez has earned a 5-2 record at #1 singles. She has a 6-1 recordwith Poltavski in doubles after playing all seven matches at the #1 position.

The Bearcats are 3-4 on the season, including 1-4 in the Northwest Conference. Willamette will host Pacific University on Saturday, March 15 at the WU Tennis Courts. Match time is set for 1 p.m. (PDT).

Sabrina Gutierrez went undefeated in singles and doubles as Willamette picked up victories over Lewis & Clark and College of Idaho.
