Willamette Set to Play at Linfield and Host George Fox

Bearcats Will Close Out Season against Wildcats and Bruins

SALEM, Ore. -- The Willamette University women's tennis team will complete the 2014-15 season with two matches this week. The Bearcats will play at Linfield College on Wednesday, April 15 at 4 p.m. (PDT) and will host George Fox University at the WU Tennis Courts on Sunday, April 19 at 12 p.m.

Willamette enters the pair of Northwest Conference matches with a 2-15 overall record and a 1-9 mark in the NWC. Linfield is 13-4 overall, 8-2 in the NWC. George Fox, which does not play until Sunday, is 9-9 on the season, 5-6 in the NWC.

The Bearcats are led by senior Denise Poltavski (Woodland Hills, CA/El Camino Real HS) and freshman Mikaila Smith (Mill Valley, CA/Tamalpais HS). Poltavski is 10-5 at #1 singles this year, while Smith has achieved a record of 10-6, mostly at #2 singles. Poltavski and Smith have combined for a 9-7 record at #1 doubles.

WU lost a close match to Pacific University, 5-4, this past Sunday. In that match the singles lineup for the Bearcats included Poltavski at #1, Smith at #2, Ellen Rumley (Fr., Anchorage, AK/East Anchorage HS) at #3, Emily Guimont (Jr., El Dorado Hills, CA/Folsom HS) at #4, Katie Adams (Fr., McLean, VA/American International School) at #5 and Ashley Evans (Fr., Canby, OR/Canby HS) at #6.

In doubles against the Boxers, Willamette's teams were Poltavski and Smith at #1, Rumley and Guimont at #2, and Adams and Evans at #3.

Linfield holds third place in the NWC standings. The Wildcats are led by #1 singles player Ella Riddle (Fr.), who is 14-3 on the season. When the teams met for the first time on March 14, Riddle defeated Poltavski, 6-4, 6-3. Riddle is 13-4 in doubles, including 12-4 with Mackenzie Fraser (So.).

The Wildcats shut out George Fox 9-0 on April 12. Linfield's singles lineup against the Bruins featured Riddle at #1, Basia Kopecka (Fr.) at #2, Kaila Nip (Sr.) at #3, Marisa Doveri (Fr.) at #4, Courtney Hammagren (Fr.) at #5, and Kelly Watanabe (Sr.) at #6. In doubles, the teams for the Wildcats were Riddle and Fraser at #1, Kopecka and Hammagren at #2, and Doveri and Sierra Lemon (Fr.) at #3.

George Fox featured a singles lineup of Sarah Tuemmler (Jr.) at #1, Chantelle Hadeed (Sr.) at #2, Taylor Barnes (So.) at #3, Catrina Kwong (Fr.) at #4, Andrea Motley (Fr.) at #5, and Ali Diehl (Jr.) at #6.

The doubles teams for GFU against Linfield were Tuemmler and Hadeed at #1, Motley and Diehl at #2, and Kwong and Krista Rey (Sr./Jr.) at #3.

Linfield won versus Willamette 8-1 in the meeting last month. George Fox defeated Willamette 6-3 on April 4 in Newberg, Ore.

Ellen Rumley has played mostly #3 and #4 singles as well as #2 and #3 doubles as a freshman this season.
