Smith Wins in Quarterfinals of Consolation Singles at ITA Northwest Regional

WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Mikaila Smith (Jr., Mill Valley, CA/Tamalpais HS) of Willamette University won matches in the second round and the quarterfinals of the consolation singles bracket on Saturday, Oct. 1 at the ITA Northwest Regional, hosted by Whitman College. Smith will play in the semifinals of the consolation bracket on Sunday.

Smith, one of eigth players seeded 9th, began Saturday by defeating Emily Brink of George Fox University, 6-3, 6-4, in the second round of the consolation bracket. In the quarterfinals, Smith rolled past Emily Sundquist from Whitworth University, 6-2, 6-1.

Up next for Smith is a match against Basia Kopecka of Linfield College in the semifinals at 9 a.m. (PDT) on Sunday.

Willamette's Mina Mizutani (Fr., Los Alamitos, CA/Los Alamitos HS) also competed for the Bearcats in the second round of the consolation singles bracket. Mizutani fell to Kopecka, 6-0, 6-1.

In the first round of the consolation doubles bracket on Saturday, Smith and and Alexis Gjurasic (So., Olympia, WA/Capital HS) competed against Paige Rohrbach and Madeline Ball from Whitworth. Rohrbach and Ball outscored Smith and Gjurasic, 8-4.

Hannah Andres (So., Sammamish, WA/Skyline HS) and Mizutani of Willamette received a bye in the first round of consolation doubles. In the second round, Andres and Mizutani were defeated by Lizzy Chao and Nicki Bouche from the University of Puget Sound, 8-2.

The ITA Northwest Regional will conclude on Sunday with the completion of the championship draws in singles and doubles, as well as the consolation draws.
