Smith and Gjurasic Win #1 Doubles, but College of Idaho Defeats Bearcats, 8-1

SALEM, Ore. -- Willamette's top doubles team of Mikaila Smith (Jr., Mill Valley, CA/Tamalpais HS) and Alexis Gjurasic (So., Olympia, WA/Capital HS) won a tight match at #1 doubles, but the College of Idaho prevailed in the remaining doubles matches and swept the singles competition to defeat the Bearcats, 8-1, at the Salem Tennis and Swim Club on Sunday, Feb. 12. College of Idaho improved to 1-3 on the season. Willamette fell to 0-2.

Smith and Gjurasic battled Hailey Boyd and Alex Sorte through 16 games, before the Willamette duo defeated the team from College of Idaho, 9-7.

The Lady Yotes took #2 doubles, as Erin Huffman and Megan Huffman shut out Hannah Andres (So., Sammamish, WA/Skyline HS) and Mina Mizutani (Fr., Los Alamitos, CA/Los Alamitos HS), 8-0. At #3 doubles, the C of I team of Allie Boyd and Vanessa Almaraz downed Katie Adams (Jr., McLean, VA/American International School) and Noemi Cruz-Cruz (Jr., Galt, CA/Liberty Ranch HS), 8-1.

College of Idaho won all of the singles matches in straight sets. In the #1 singles match, Sorte downed Smith, 6-2, 6-0. Hailey Boyd and Alyssa Oberg (Fr., Roseville, CA/Oakmont HS) played a competitive first set, with Boyd winning 6-3. Boyd won the second set, 6-0.

The Bearcats will play again on Friday, Feb. 17 against Lewis & Clark College. Match time in Portland, Orgon, is set for 5 p.m. (PST).
