PORTLAND, ORE. -- Willamette University sent a small group of runners to the Pier Park Invitational, hosted by the University of Portland, to open the 2011 cross country season on Saturday, Sept. 10. Four members of the Bearcat men's team and two runners from the WU women's team competed.
The top finisher for the Willamette men's team was Ben Mow (Fr., Granite Falls, WA/Granite Falls HS), who took 29th with a time of 21:00.90. Julio Silva (Fr., Medford, OR/St. Mary's HS) registered a time of 21:34.87, while Andrew Bishop (Fr., Fairbanks, AK/West Valley HS) finished in 21:50.34. Brin Manoogian-O'Dell completed the course in 23:34.54.
Winning the 8-kilometer men's race was Zachary Carpenter of Portland State University at 18:39.45.
Cathy Monahan (Sr., La Grande, OR/La Grande HS) of Willamette earned a time of 20:45.27 in the 5-kilometer women's race. Maggie Ruwith (Fr., Canby, OR/Canby HS) ran the race in 22:58.78.
The women's race was won by Merel Van Steenbergen from the University of Portland. She registered a time of 17:29.46 to claim the victory.
Willamette will next compete at the Linfield Preview on Saturday, Sept. 24 at the Willamette Mission State Park near Wheatland, Ore. The meet is set to begin at 10 a.m. (PDT).
