Arizona State University invites you to take part in an exciting weekend of racing at the 2023 Sun Devil Triathlon Classic on Saturday, November 11th. Beautiful Tempe Town Lake North Park is the center of all things triathlon with racing opportunities for Age Group, Elite and Collegiate triathletes!  Featuring the Challenge Cup Age Group Draft Legal Sprint with 28 World Championship Slots available, and the 2023 Women’s Collegiate Triathlon National Championship!

Challenge Cup Race Details

New for 2023 is the Challenge Cup where top Age Group athletes, All-Americans and Collegiate Clubs from around the country are invited to end their season in a head to head, draft legal race. With 28 World Triathlon Championship Finals slots on the line, we expect some competitive draft legal racing! World Triathlon Championship slots will be awarded one per age group on a roll down basis, male and female. The 2024 World Triathlon Championship Finals will be held in Málaga, Spain (exact date TBD). See the news release HERE.

Featuring a 750 meter swim in Tempe Town Lake, a fast, multi-loop closed 20K bike course and a fast, flat 5K 2 loop run. These courses are fast, technical at times and very spectator friendly. Bring your a-game and the entire family to race then stick around to watch the NCAA Collegiate Triathlon later in the day, we look forward to hosting you! All athletes are expected to adhere to the draft legal racing and equipment rules as outlined on the USAT website HERE. Be sure to scroll to the bottom of the rules page for the pdf checklists! Road bikes only, no standard triathlon bikes!

The current water temp for Tempe Town Lake can be found HERE. Remember, wetsuits are only allowed for the Challenge Cup if the water temperature is below 71.6F (see rules linked above).

Swimming Opportunities
There will be a guarded practice swim on Friday before the race from 3-4pm. Athletes must have received their race packets and check in/out of the water. This is included in your race entry.

This clinic is limited to 40 athletes and those racing in the Sun Devil Classic Challenge Cup.

Packet Pick Up

Women's Collegiate Triathlon Nationals

Race Day Saturday November 11th, 2023 6:00 - 7:00am

Athlete check in is located in the large white tent adjacent to the finish line at the race site.

Timing Chips

All athletes are required to wear a timing chip during the competition.
Timing Chips for the Women's Collegiate National Championships race will be distributed at the swim start.
Age group timing chips will be distributed when they check in their bikes to the Transition Area in the morning.
It is the athlete’s responsibility to wear the timing chip on race day.
Volunteers will collect the timing chip at the finish line after completing the triathlon.
Athletes who lose their chip will be responsible for a $100 replacement fee. 

Course Nutrition

Water and Powerade will be available in transition and on the run course for all athletes.

Awards Presented by Air Force Special Warfare

Women's Collegiate National Championships
The top three athletes in each division (Division I, Division II, Division III) will be presented at the awards ceremony after the completion of the competitions.

The Division I, Division II and Division III Team Champions will be announced immediately after the individual athlete awards.  

Challenge Cup Age Group Draft Legal Triathlon
The top 3 Overall and Masters athletes (M/F) will be recognized in the Challenge Cup Age Group Draft Legal event. In addition, there will be Age Group Awards 3 deep in 5 year increments starting 16-19, 20-24, etc.

There are 28 World Cup slots available at this event, 1 per age age group (M/F). USA Triathlon will contact athletes after the race to accept their spot or to allow that spot to roll down to the next athlete placing in that respective age group.

Parking

Please note there is ZERO parking directly at the race site. All parking is at least a 1/2 mile walk/ride to/from the race site. Be aware of bike course traffic closures and plan accordingly.

Best Option - 0.8 Mile Walk to Race Site
Parking Garage on Rio Salado/Ash - 226 Ash Ave, Tempe, AZ 85281

Exit the garage by walking northbound on S. Ash Ave to  Rio Salado Parkway. Take a right heading east then then turn left onto the Mill Ave Bridge. You are now on the sidewalk parallel to the bike course. Once you walk over the Mill Ave Bridge you can walk down to the venue located on the lake. Please allow yourself a 20- to 25-minute walk and stay on the sidewalk at all times due to bike traffic on the roads.

Next Best Option 0.5 Mile Walk to Race Site
Tempe Town Lake Marina Parking Lot - 550 E Tempe Town Lake, Tempe, AZ 85281

This lot tends to fill early in the day and can be tough to get to b/c of bike course lane closures.
The best way to access the Marina lot is from Rural/Scottsdale Road.

Anti-Doping/Drug Testing

In accordance with U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) regulations, athletes may be drug tested at this event. Should drug testing occur, there are strict protocols that must be followed and will be coordinated by the on-site USADA representative as well as a USA Triathlon staff member.
