Carr Wins Women's 5,000 with Personal Record at John Knight Twilight

MONMOUTH, Ore. -- Hazel Carr (Sr., Seattle, WA/The Northwest School) of Willamette University won the women's 5,000-meter run while setting a personal record of 18:23.40 at the John Knight Twilight on Friday, April 5 at McArthur Field. Carr took first place by 56 seconds. The meet was held on the campus of host Western Oregon University.

Carr's winning time broke her previous best of 19:00.75 by 37.35 seconds, as she dropped below 19:00 for the first time. Danel Camacho of Western Oregon placed second in 19:19.40.

Risa Shutz (So., Redmond, WA/Redmond HS) of WU was third in a personal record time of 19:20.42, narrowly missing second place. Shutz lowered her previous top time by 42.62 seconds and finished in less than 20:00 for the first time. Dana Hamilton (Fr., Eugene, OR/Sheldon HS) of Willamette, running in her first competitive 5,000 in track and field for the Bearcats, placed sixth and was timed at 19:52.66.

Also for Willamette, Connor Giannini (Jr., Veradale, WA/Gonzaga Prep) placed second in the men's 400-meter dash and Hope Duenas (Jr., Covina, CA/Covina HS) was second in the women's discus throw.

Giannini registered a personal record time of 50.25 in the 400-meter dash. He lowered his previous top time of 50.61 seconds by 0.36, a significant drop in just a short race. Gabe Arce-Torres of WOU won the event in 49.38 seconds. Giannini finished fifth in the men's 200-meter dash with a time of 22.77 seconds.

Duenas earned a top throw of 141' 8" to grab second place in the discus. It was the third time she has thrown over 141' this season. Duenas was two inches away from the leader, Moana Gianotti of Western Oregon, who attained a top mark of 141' 10". AaLea Kolb from College of Idaho was third at 137' 10".

In the men's 1,500-meter run, Michael Montague (Jr., San Diego, CA/Canyon Crest Academy) of Willamette took sixth place out of 54 runners with a personal record of 3:57.10. His previous top time was 3:59.35 at the Pacific Preview on March 9. Keith Carlson (Sr., Bainbridge Island, WA/Bainbridge HS) was 19th in 4:06.16, as he achieved his second-fastest time in the event.

Other Top Results for Willamette

RoShaan Rogers (Gr., Roseville, CA/Woodreek HS) was fourth for the Bearcats in the men's 400-meter hurdles with a time of 57.40 seconds. He just missed third place, which went to Jett Pharn-Cromb of Clark College in 57.36 seconds.

Emily Evans (Sr., Anchorage, AK/South Anchorage HS) placed seventh in the women's 3000-meter steeplechase in 10:48.46. It was the third consecutive time she has completed the steeplechase in under 12:00, including both times this season. Isabel Duxbury (So., Seattle, WA/University Prep), also from Willamette, earned a time of 12:09.86 in her second competitive steeplechase.

Adrian Schnee (Fr., Kalispell, MT/Glacier HS), a heptathlete recorded a top distance of 16' 0.50" in the women's long jump, just missing her personal best of 16' 4.50" set at the Pacific Multi-Event earlier this week.

Brian Peck (Jr., Reno, NV/Reno HS) registered a top distance of 20' 1" in the men's long jump and produced a top javelin throw of 139' 10". He was close to his personal records of 20' 10" in the long jump and 145' 6" in the javelin throw. Fellow decathlete Keaton Beckmann (So., Salem, OR/Sprague HS) competed in the javelin and attained a top throw of 155' 9".

Although Schnee, Peck and Beckmann are multi-event athletes, the heptathlon and decathlon were not part of the John Knight Twilight.

Several Willamette athletes will compete in throwing events at the Jenn Boyman Memorial Invitational at Linfield College in McMinnville, Oregon, on Saturday, April 6. Field events are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. (PDT).
