Soren Sorensen is in his 24th year as an assistant coach for the Bearcats in 2023-24. He leads and develops Willamette University’s throwers. As a coach for the Bearcats, he has guided athletes to success at the national and conference levels.

Under Sorensen, Nate Matlock ('05) earned two All-America awards in the hammer and set school records in the shot put and the hammer. Sorensen helped Sophia Dentzel ('07) and Grant Piros ('09) to All-America status in the javelin and coached Melinda Fahey ('08) to a school record in the hammer. In 2018 and 2019, Hope Duenas ('20) won NWC women's discus tiles and competed at the NCAA Championships. She placed 20th in the discus in 2018 and was 11th in 2019.

Willamette throwing records are filled with student-athletes who Sorensen coached. More than half of Willamette’s Top 10 marks were earned under his tutelage.

Sorensen graduated in 1987 with a degree in Secondary Education-Physical Education from Western Oregon University, where he competed in track and field and powerlifting. He was an NAIA All-American in the hammer and discus. He won a Collegiate National Powerlifting Championship in 1986 and won a U.S. Powerlifting title in 1990 and placed fourth in 1991.
