Blackburn Registers a Goal at 12:49, but CMS Rallies for a 3-1 Win

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. -- Emma Blackburn (Sr., F, Los Altos, CA/Saint Francis HS) scored a goal for Willamette University at 12:49 -- her 12th career goal and 11th goal since the start of the 2019 season -- but Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (Calif.) rallied for a 3-1 victory over the Bearcats at California Lutheran University on Friday, Sept. 3. The Athenas led 2-1 at halftime and added a goal just over nine minutes into the second half.

CMS advanced its record to 1-1 on the season. Willamette fell to 0-2.

Blackburn's goal was unassisted. She scored on the Bearcats' third shot of the game after CMS goalie Athena Manthouli saved a shot by Morgan Richards (Sr., D, Roseburg, OR/Roseburg HS/Univ. of Oregon) just 41 seconds into the game and stopped an attempt by Aanya Friedeman (So., M, Camas, WA/Camas HS) at 2:46.

Taylor Arakaki tied the score at 1-1 for the Athenas at 15:31. Nicole Oberlag received an assist on the play. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps moved in front on a goal by Kelly Schultz at 22:40. The Athenas outshot the Bearcats, 8-4 in the first half.

CMS registered the last goal of the game at 54:27. Ava Sherry scored the goal, while Oberlag earned her second assist of the contest.

The Athenas earned a 17-4 advantage in total shots during the game, including a 10-4 edge in shots on goal. WU starting goalkeeper Jordan Roue (Sr., GK, San Jose, CA/Prospect HS) played the first 45 minutes and recorded four saves. Sam Borngasser (Fy., GK, Grants Pass, OR/Grants Pass HS) was in goal for the Bearcats in the second half and finished the game with three saves. Manthouli made three saves for Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.

Willamette will play California Lutheran on Sunday, Sept. 5. Game time is set for 12 p.m. (PDT).
