Loggers fell Bearcats 2-0
SALEM, Ore. — Puget Sound defeated Willamette 2-0 on Sunday at Sparks Field. Puget Sound scored a goal in each half, with their defense securing a shutout. Willamette goalkeeper Siera Edwards recorded four saves on the day, but could not prevent the two goals from Puget Sound, which outshot Willamette 20-6.
The first half began with Willamette's defense holding firm against early pressure from Puget Sound. Edwards made a crucial save in the 21st minute to keep the game level, stopping a well-directed shot by Anne Linggi. Willamette's Claire Warthen and Ella McComas each attempted to break the deadlock with shots that narrowly missed the target. Puget Sound eventually capitalized on their momentum, with Sydney Boyd scoring in the 38th minute off an assist from Hayden Goodman, putting them ahead. Despite a late effort by Maddee Reid that was saved, Willamette entered the break trailing 1-0.
The second period began with Willamette applying pressure early, securing consecutive corner kicks in the 47th and 48th minutes. McComas had a notable attempt that went wide, and Erica Stotts followed with a shot saved by Puget Sound's goalkeeper, Gianna Maldonado. Despite the offensive push, Willamette could not break through.
Puget Sound capitalized on their opportunities, with Leila Hausia-Haugen scoring in the 71st minute, assisted by Ella Oetinger and Boyd, extending their lead. Willamette continued to defend against a series of attempts, with Edwards making critical saves, including a stop against Goodman in the 87th minute. The match concluded with Puget Sound maintaining their lead, resulting in a final score of 2-0.
Edwards recorded four saves in the match, facing 20 shots in her 90 minutes of play. Warthen contributed with two shots, one of which was on goal. McComas also added two shots to the team's efforts, though none were on target. Stotts finished with one shot and converted it into a shot on goal.
The next challenge for the Bearcats takes them on the road to McMinnville, Oregon, where they will face Linfield University. The match is set for October 1 at 5 p.m.
