Gerardo Magaña is in his first season as the offensive coordinator and the offensive line coach at Willamette University in 2023-24. Magaña arrived at Willamette after serving as the offensive line coach and recruiting coordinator and adjunct professor of Kinesiology at the University of Jamestown in North Dakota since August, 2020. Prior to becoming the offensive line coach at Jamestown, Magaña coached the tight ends and fullbacks for the Jimmies in 2019-20, and was the assistant special teams coordinator. In 2022, he was named to FootballScoop's Minority Watch List/Rising Stars.

Magaña was a graduate assistant coach working with the tight ends and offensive linemen at Northern State University in Aberdeen, South Dakota, from 2017-19. He also coordinated campus visits. He began his coaching career as an assistant coach for the offensive line and tight ends at Los Medanos Community College in Pittsburg, California.

As a college player, Magaña competed as an offensive lineman at Los Medanos CC in 2008 and 2009 and at Northern State in 2010 and 2011. He was an All-Conference selection at Los Medanos for both seasons, and also earned All-Conference honors at Northern State in 2011. At Los Medanos, he also received the Hank Gonzalez Award for the most dedicated player. He was chosen as a team captain at Northern State in 2011 as voted on by his teammates and coaches. 

Magaña joined the Northern State men's track and field team as a thrower after completing his football eligibility. He placed in the top 10 in the shot put at the 2012 Northern Sun Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Sports Marketing and Administration from Northern State in 2013. He earned a Master of Science in Education, with a focus on Sports Performance and Leadership at NSU in 2019.
