SALEM, Ore. -- Alex Weirth (Sr., Port Orchard, WA/Crosspoint Academy) of Willamette University has been named the Northwest Conference Men's Golf Student-Athlete of the Week for his efforts during the Battle at Bar Run on Tuesday, March 14. Weirth tied teammate Lucas Paul (Fy., Salem, OR/South Salem HS) after 18 holes with a 5-under par 65 on the par-70 Bar Run Golf Course, before winning a playoff against Paul on the second extra hole.

The second hole during the playoff was the ninth hole, where Weirth shot a par to win the individual tournament championship. Weirth also contributed to Willamette winning the team title with a score of 5-under par 275. The Bearcats won the team championship by 15 strokes.

Initially the tournament was scheduled for 36 holes. During Monday's first round, all 38 competitors finished between eight and 10 holes before play was suspended due to the weather. Since only a portion of the overall field completed nine holes, Monday's round was canceled and the tournament was reduced to Tuesday's 18 holes.

Prior to reaching the playoff, Weirth shot an eagle, five birdies, and 10 pars, while recording just two bogey's. He earned his eagle on the par-5 fourth hole. He produced birdies on the fifth, 10th, 12th, 14th, and 16th holes.

The Bearcats will be back in action when they host the Willamette Valley Cup at Creekside Golf Club on Saturday, March 18 and Sunday, March 19. Both rounds of the tournament are scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. (PDT).
