(MEN'S TENNIS) SALEM, ORE. -- Willamette University earned victories in four singles positions, as the Bearcats claimed a 6-3 win over Lewis & Clark College on Saturday, March 3 at the Courthouse Tennis Club. WU also claimed triumphs at #2 doubles and #3 doubles, while improving to 3-5 overall, 3-4 in the NWC. Lewis & Clark fell to 2-3 overall, with all five matches in the NWC.
Willamettes most decisive win was earned by Geoff Klein (Jr., Sagle, ID/Sandpoint HS) at #6 singles. Klein defeated Tom Youmans, 6-1, 6-1. The Bearcats also received singles wins from Eric MacMillan (Jr., Twin Falls, ID/Twin Falls HS) at #2, Shaun Mihalick (Sr., Mukilteo, WA/Eastlake HS) at #4 and Micah Mack (Fr., Wenatchee, WA/Wenatchee HS) at #5.
In their #2 doubles match, Mihalick and Mack defeated George Allen and Peter Ray of L&C, 8-5. At #3 doubles, Willamettes team of Klein and Ethan Heinirich (Fr., San Carlos, CA/Davis HS) downed Lewis & Clarks pair of Andrew Moller and Matthias Kullawatz, 8-4.
The Pioneers earned all three of their wins in closely contested matches. Allen won #1 singles over Donovan LeDoux (Fr., Keizer, OR/McNary HS) , 2-6, 6-4, 6-3, while Luke Wheeler edged Fitz Paccione (Jr., Encinitas, CA/Cathedral Catholic HS) at #3 singles, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4. Wheeler and David Lindsay combined to win #1 doubles over LeDoux and MacMillan in a tie-breaker, 9-8 (7-5).
Willamette will host Linfield College in a Northwest Conference match on Sunday, March 4. The action is set to get underway at 1 p.m. (PST) at the Courthouse Tennis Club, but may be moved to the Willamette University Tennis Courts (outdoors) if the weather permits.
