(MENS TENNIS) TACOMA, WASH. -- The University of Puget Sound took two of three doubles matches, then won the first three singles matches, as the Loggers defeated Willamette University, 5-4, in a Northwest Conference men's tennis match at the Puget Sound Tennis Pavilion on Saturday, March 10. Puget Sound improved to 5-7 overall and to 5-6 in the NWC. Willamette dropped to 3-7 on the season, 3-6 in the NWC.
The Bearcat tandom of Shaun Mihalick (Sr., Mukilteo, WA/Eastlake HS) and Eric MacMillan (Jr., Twin Falls, ID/Twin Falls HS) got things started right for WU, as they picked up an 8-5 win at #1 doubles. From there, though, UPS won at #2 and #3 doubles, and then won the first, second, and third singles matches, to get the 5-4 win.
Willamettes remaining victories came during the fourth, fifth, and sixth singles matches. Ethan Heinrich (Fr., San Carlos, CA/Davis Senior HS) picked up the win at #4 singles, Micah Mack (Fr., Wenatchee, WA/Wenatchee HS) won at #5 singles, and Geoff Klein (Jr., Sagle, ID/Sandpoint HS) got the win at #6 singles. Mack and Heinrich lost a close match at #2 doubles, 8-6.
MacMillan, at #1 singles, narrowly lost to Puget Sound's Andrew Neal, 7-6, 7-6. WU's Fitz Paccione (Jr., Encinitas, CA/Cathedral Catholic HS) and UPS's Nick Amland battled at #2 singles, before Amland won in three sets, 6-2, 2-6, 6-2.
Willamette returns to action next Saturday when they host NWC-rival Whitworth College at the Willamette University Tennis Courts. The match is set to start at 10 a.m. (PDT).
